I think PHP is great for the easiest part, the web dictionary, the reporting, the web interface. PHP is not a real object oriented language and it has many limitation. It does not support hashes (the Perl way), thus an in-memory database is more complicate. Our automatic translator will need strong parsing capabilities, and Perl regular expressions are the quickest and most fit solution. Regex in PGP is cumbersome. Our core engine will be used both for a standalone application and a web solution (CGI). A standalome application in PHP is really a funny thing. And for certain functions we need to use a graphical toolkit, the web is just too limited. Perl has everything we need, to work quickly and for easy maintenance. I would avoid PHP-TK.. or such things. Fabrizio |
