You can set howpublished as primary if you make it visible in the table (this is
done in Preferences). The criterion will in fact stick if you later remove the field
from the table column setup.

For being able to sort properly by entry type, I advise you to wait for the first
release of JabRef, a program which we intend as a replacement for
Bibkeeper and JBibtexManager. We hope to release it within a week from
now.
