BeamNG.Earth
A 1:1 scale, streamed Earth for BeamNG.drive: drive anywhere on the planet on real elevation data and satellite imagery, with distance-based level of detail and the real curvature of the Earth.
You need BeamNG.drive (0.40.x) on Steam, 5-50 GB of free disk space for the map download cache (20 GB by default), and an internet connection, since the map downloads while you play.
Download from the Releases page: BeamNG.Earth-<version>.exe for Windows (if warned: More info > Run anyway) or the .AppImage for Linux (make it executable).
Run it with Steam open. A console window copies the mod into the game, starts the world server and launches BeamNG.drive. Closing the game stops the server.
In Freeroam, pick the BeamNG.Earth level. Press M for the world map: search a place or address, right-click to teleport, left-click to set a GPS route, and Autodrive to let the car drive it.
Features
- The whole planet at 1:1 scale on real elevation: national lidar where available (Mapterhorn: much of Europe, the US and more), Copernicus 30 m elsewhere, with buildings and small tree stands filtered out.
- Aerial imagery from open national and state orthophotos (Maryland 15 cm, many US states, NAIP, Switzerland, France, Spain, the Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Poland, Czechia, Japan and more), Sentinel-2 cloudless elsewhere. Shadows and colour seams are removed and seasonal colours graded in.
- Real view distance to the horizon, with the Earth’s curvature.
- Both poles: Antarctica up to the South Pole (2,835 m), Arctic sea ice, real polar day and night, and a minimap compass pointing to true north.
- Ground materials from land cover, with 3D grass and bushes.
- Trees and forests from a canopy height model, with regional species and autumn colours.
- Water: sea with real depth (cars sink), lakes, rivers
- Airports with marked runways, racetracks with real banking, and landmarks like the Giza pyramids.
- Buildings from Overture / OpenStreetMap in regional styles, with real heights, roofs, windows, shopfronts, churches and glass towers, plus a distant skyline.
- Roads painted into the ground, with lane markings, sidewalks, curbs, cobblestones, roundabouts and motorways with toll booths. The ground is graded under them, with retaining walls and parapets where needed.
- Street lights, utility poles, traffic signals, stop and speed-limit signs (mph or km/h by country).
- Railways as 3D track (ballast, sleepers, rails, bridges) and tram tracks.
- Gas stations in regional style, where the stock refuel prompt works.
- Bridges of their real type (beam, truss, arch, cable-stayed, suspension) with real heights and spans and 6 m of headroom over roads. Tunnels have portals and lights.
- Real time: sun, moon and stars as they really are for your place, date and clock. You can change the time in the pause menu and switch back to Real any time.
- Real weather from Open-Meteo, updated as you travel: clouds, fog, wind with gusts that push cars, rain, snow, temperature. It runs through the game’s weather system, and a manual mode is available.
- Seasons change the photo colours and tree leaves.
- Real gravity for your latitude and altitude (WGS84 + EGM2008).
- Drive anywhere at speed: the physics ground follows the car, the origin floats with you, and the world streams ahead.
- Buildings, sidewalks, curbs and bridge decks are solid.
- Fast teleports: the server may borrow idle CPU cores (Linux; --load-boost off disables it).
- Visited places load faster: built data is cached on disk up to 2 GB (BNE_REVISIT_MB sets the size, BNE_REVISIT=off disables it).
- AI support: the mod builds BeamNG’s road graph from real roads (lanes, one-way streets, speed limits, driving side, signals), so stock AI, traffic and police work. Parked cars fill streets and lots.
- Multiplayer (BeamMP, in testing): BeamNG.Earth has its own server category, cars and damage sync between players, and players show on the map.
- Level select with famous places and a Random location button. “Where you left off” returns you to your last spot.
- World map (M): pan and zoom the globe, satellite or street view, borders and names, address search, teleport anywhere. Controllers are supported.
- GPS routes anywhere (OSRM / OpenStreetMap), with route arrows on the road and the minimap. The first 20 km of data download ahead.
- Autodrive follows the route in lane at legal speed.
- Saved and recent places.
- A slim status bar (street, town, country, loading progress), coordinates above the minimap, data credits, an “.Earth” app layout and a one-time welcome page.
- Pause menu settings, keybinds, in-game reports and a wireframe view (Ctrl+Alt+W).
- Diagnostic log logs/server.log (in %LOCALAPPDATA%\beamng-earth on Windows, ~/.cache/beamng-earth on Linux): hardware, hitches and a summary every minute.
- Easy setup: one download per system (Windows .exe, Linux AppImage). From source, use install.py and start.py.
- Runs on a Steam Deck (aim: 30 fps on the Handheld preset). The GPU is used for some server work when available.
- Offline play from the cache (with a size cap and “clear cache”).
- In-game update notices. “Update now” downloads and verifies the new version.
