#1 subject breaking in main index

in the main index, subject lines are wrapped with
(hyphen)(space)(new line). this ends up being ugly; why
not use <td width="some percentage"> and let the
browser wrap it? page widening could be prevented by
using a lameness filter instead of trim() that breaks a
sequence of more than foo characters.
