Has anyone successfully installed programmer's workshop (http://developer.apple.com/tools/mpw-tools/) under Basilisk?

I'm trying to install the latest 20MB image of MPW on Build 142 of BasiliskII for NT running System 7.5.3 with a ROM from a Classic II.  When I try to execute the image I get:

The document "MPW-GM.img.bin" could not be opened, because the application program that created it could not be found.

Could not find a translation extension with appropriate translators.

It's been a few years since I've used Macs regularily, sorry if this is something obvious.

I ran into that problem and worked it but can't actually tell you the steps taken as I now run the system using stuffit expander as second nature - like WinZip.

When you download in Windows don't try and open the package with anything at all. Just go into Windows Explorer and to the Basilisk directory.

Double-click on the file that is your Mac Hard Drive which will open HFVExplorer. In HFVExplorer open the directory with your file and place it into your hard drive at the top of HFVExplorer Directory.

HFVExplorer will automatocally handle the extension and either strip out everything are leave it alone. Mac files seem to be triple compressed at times.

As for using stuffit expander you need a copy of stuffit exapander to open it as it is not self-extracting. I downloaded a copy of Ardi's Mac Emulator known as Terminator to unstuff Stuffit and then used HFVExplorer to put it into my Hard Drive. You can also get a working copy from http://www.emaculation.com/articles/starterdisk.zip which will give you a starter disk with OS 7.5.3 on it as well as Stuffit v5.5 already decoded. In Basilisk GUI go to Disk section and place the starter disk under your primary hard drive and run program. Once loaded just drag the file over to your main drive from your starter disk.

As for unstuffing Mac does not handle file associations as well as Windows does - so sometimes you need to drag the file over to the Stuffit Icon and let go - This will start the program and unstuff it to the level needed.

      Hope this helps,

      Bill

I'm pretty sure Stuffit ships a .sea.bin version of expander .. Just use that HFvExplorer trick to copy the .bin file in.  Note: do not try to dnwload hqx files in Netscape, it tries to decode them (on linux at least ;) )
