I think Alan's suggestion is a good one, but it's a bit of a hassle.
Note though that the two installations must run against different
databases and also against different data directories.
If you don't want to have to go through the hassle of installing
two instances of apache/PHP, you could just download both PHP 4.2 and
4.3 switch between them as needed (e.g. by doing a make install from
the source dir of the one you want to use, and take down apache in the
meantime).
