Thank you all for your responses. Since a differential backup is
currently running I can't try out the suggestions, but I think I have
the answer as a result of all of them. The syntax I was using is
correct, The problem is, I think, the lineage of the machine. I am a
retired ancient programmer who use to contribute to large, critical
system for New York City. I was one of 3 person programming team who
wrote the original shelter care system for homeless men. It handled all
reservations and bed assignments for about 50,000 people. It was run on
a Prime 750 computer with a HUGE 600 MEGABYTE (not gigabyte!) hard disk.
Communications were largely over standard telephone lines, with either
1200 or 2400 baud acoustic modems. One very large shelter had a trio of
56K isdn lines, with at least one or two of them down several times a
week. The computer running the bacula server was purchased used with the
250 gig drive. Rather than abandoning that drive I added a second disc
and install Slackware on it. (That was my first, and still favorite
Linux software.) I used Lilo as the boot manager, installing it on the
primary,. 250 gig drive. When I finally decided to get rid of software I
never used, I could throw out the disc. I deleted all partitions on it
and reformatted as ext4. I think that by creating an attach point on /
as opposed to creating it on a traditional /mnt or /media directory I
caused the problem. I'll be able to test all suggestions when the
current backup completes. Thank you all.
