I'm in Taiwan right now so I don't have access to my home system. In general my laptop does full dumps about 2-3 times faster with rsyncd compared to smbclient. The first dump isn't much faster than smbclient. Incrementals are about the same; maybe smbclient is a bit faster for incrementals because rsyncd/cygwin is a but slow building the directory tree. The performance impact on the client during backups is still noticeable, but the full dump duration is shorter. I'd recommend trying it on a system for yourself. Rsync 2.5.6 includes an optional patch from me that substantially improves the performance with cygwin. Sometime I've been meaning to build a zip file that includes the minimal install of the patched rsync and cygwin dlls plus a README. If you want to create this that would be great. I'll release this on the perlrsync project. Craig |
