This is why you should regularly save /etc/backuppc to a tarball on the 
backup media, or mount that directory from the backup media.

I'd also recommend choosing a filesystem that allows the mount command 
to specify an owner and group for the whole filesystem, so you can move 
the media to another host without having to chown everything.
