Wow, with as precise a call as this is, I'm completely astonished it wasn't the right one. The main config file _and_ the machine-specific one contain the same thing: $Conf{TarClientCmd} = '$sshPath -q -n -l root $host' . ' $tarPath -c -v -f - -C $shareName+' . ' --totals'; There _is_ a dash right after that -f. And, further searching on the 'net doesn't show me any other possible explanations of this.
