yes! i have run it in a test environment on real hardware in nexenta, which is opensolaris meets ubuntu. works very well. be sure to turn on ZFS compression and turn OFF backuppc compression. ZFS compresses much more efficiently(CPU wise) and I get much higher transfer rates this way.
