[BackupPC-users] rsync error: error allocating core memory buffers

Hello,
I'm using BackupPC and find it great.
Backups work fine, but restores over rsync and ssh are failing with an
rsync error:

Running: /usr/bin/ssh -q -x -i /home/backuppc/.ssh/identity -l rbackup

Tried again: got 0 bytes
Done: 3 files, 67614 bytes
restore failed: Unable to read 4 bytes

I googled the rsync archives but could not find a solution.
I thought it might be not enough RAM on the client end, but it has 256
MB - surely
enough to restore 3 files. Similary the backup server has 512 MB.

Has anyone seen this before and know of a solution?
