Your error messages didn't make much sense to me but I wondered if
the archive creation process could be failing to close the source
files (perhaps from a bug in a version of the perl modules) and
stopping when the process or system limit is reached.  Can you run
'lsof' or something similar during the archive creation to see if
this is likely?
