David, I have found using OpenVPN TAP adaptors on Windows boxes results in a secure, mostly maintenance free way to connect many machines together on a separate network used only for backup purposes. It has proven to be exceptionally reliable over wireless LAN & internet links under heavy use, so I imagine it would work OK over slow internet links as well. I synchronise a 230 GB raid array each night this way.. though I am not yet using BackupPC. You might need to open a hole in your router depending on which way your TAP connections are established. I don't know how suitable this would be as it might compromise security between remote sites by linking them together, but it fulfils my needs as the Windows boxes I link have good passwords with account lockout and auditing turned on. Could this be a simple reliable solution - BackupPC / Samba / OpenVPN on a single Linux server, allowing windows OpenVPN clients to all auto connect directly? Can anyone see any potential pitfalls that can't be overcome? http://openvpn.net/ Xenek ----- Original Message ----- From: "David Koski" <da...@ko...> To: <bac...@li...> Sent: Thursday, June 02, 2005 3:41 AM Subject: [BackupPC-users] Windows client with rsync failing > Stats: > > backuppc host: Debian testing snip > > Also, what other backuppc options are there for backing Windows up over a > public > network securely? > > Regards, > David Koski > da...@ko... > > |
