It would depend what isp you're both using and their routing tables. An example I have is that the next door neighbour is using a different isp to me, and packets between our servers go via a capital city in another state - 1000km away... It's worth doing traceroutes and pings to find out which will be quicker. Especially when using rsync to back up the system, return trip time will make backups a lot faster once the initial backup has completed, due to the time it takes to send checksumming information is affected more by ping time than pipe size.
