Hi, Dejan,

Why was this stuff not carried from 1.0 into 1.2?  I'd like to have a go
at reimplementing it, but I need to know if it's just a case of
reimplementing the functionality as it stands in 1.0, or changing it to
accomodate some or other requirement.
