There should be a way to have the renderers draw without having the plot drawn. I've added a plotVisible property to dasPlot, and the visible property now binds to this.
There's a problem with this, that the "add hidden plot" feature on the layout tab that adds a hidden plot covering N plots and adding one colorbar now grabs the mouse events.
