I suspect the Nvidia driver interfers somehow with aureal because on even minimal grafic actions i get kind of distortions (beeps, klicks) even on preemptible and low latency kernel. I'm using i845 chipset. To me ist seems as those nvidia drivers are locking a long time - haven't verified though if it disappears by not using nvidia drivers ... maybe later ... i'll report
