It may have worked itself out...
I used the snapshot of v19 from portaudio's website and it seems to work
much better and successfully free()'s the card now.
Can I suggest that the snapshot of portaudio on the 1.2.2 tarball be
changed? Or, at the least, put a front-pagey addendum pointing to the wiki
article about compiling the portaudio snapshot for 2.6 kernels.
A testament to the power of linux, I had about 8 stereo tracks doing deleays
of a sample and it was working with some pretty decent latency. The VU
meters are pretty sweet too.

Thanks for the report! For future tarballs, instead of shipping our own
PortAudio snapshot, maybe we should just recommend that users get the
latest code from portaudio.com if they want to experiment with v19.
