Hey Folks, Seems like it's been a long while since we last published anything around here... There has been quite a lot of activity in SVN over the past few weeks and I expect quite a bit more over the next two. I'm hoping to drop a new release of the 3.0 framework code shortly (Before MAX). We could really use some help checking out stability at this point, so if you get a chance, please pull the latest sources out of SVN and check out the latests posts at: http://asserttrue.com/articles/tag/asunit These latest builds support Asynchronous test methods (AS 3 only - for now), Much better support for complex Flex component instantiation, and I finally spent some time cleaning up the sourceforge mailman program, so we should see less spam (hopefully). Anyhoo - please let us know via this list if you have any questions or comments. Thanks, Luke Bayes www.asunit.org |

Hey Folks, Thanks to some gentle prodding from the Eyefodder "Deathmatch" and more than a small handful of requests, We finally got asynchronous test methods working in AsUnit! We have also introduced much more robust support for Flex 2 applications. The latest build of AsUnit 3.x (in Subversion only) has these features but we need your help to test them out. Please pull down the latest sources from sourceforge svn by opening a terminal and performing the following steps: (you must have subversion client installed and available in your path) mkdir asunit svn co https://svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/asunit/trunk/framework/as3 . (the trailing period will put the files into the current directory without creating another subdirectory) Here is an example of an asynchronous test method: // This is an asynchronous test method public function testAsyncFeature():void { // create a new object that dispatches events... var dispatcher:IEventDispatcher = new EventDispatcher(); // get a TestCase async event handler reference // the 2nd arg is an optional timeout in ms. (default=1000ms) var handler:Function = addAsync(changeHandler, 2000); // subscribe to your event dispatcher using the returned handler dispatcher.addEventListener(Event.CHANGE, handler); // cause the event to be dispatched. // either immediately: //dispatcher.dispatchEvent(new Event(Event.CHANGE)); // or in the future < your assigned timeout setTimeout(dispatcher.dispatchEvent, 200, new Event(Event.CHANGE)); } protected function changeHandler(event:Event):void { // perform assertions in your handler assertEquals(Event.CHANGE, event.type); } That should be enough to get you going with Asynchronous test methods! Please let us know on this list if you have any problems. Thanks, Luke Bayes www.asunit.org |

Hey Keative, You should be able to download the framework.zip file from http://asunit.org/#getStarted Just make sure asunit/framework/as3 is in your fla classpath. We haven't done any testing with Flash Authoring for that release yet, but you should be able to point Flash Authoring at a base class for the entire movie. This should be a class that extends TestRunner and calls it's start(SomeTestCase) from it's constructor or onLoad handler. Please let me know if this doesn't work for you, or if you have other questions. Thanks, Luke On 10/5/06, Keative <ke...@gm...> wrote: > > Hi Luke, > > May I know where I can download updated AsUnit 3.x as you mentioned? > http://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?forum_id=614609 > > Currently, I am using Flash Pro 9 AS 3 Preview: > http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/flash9as3preview/ > > I wanna know how I can execute the unit test by creating a .fla instead of > using Flex Builder. > > Thanks, > > Keative > > > > |

Hi Luke, May I know where I can download updated AsUnit 3.x as you mentioned? http://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?forum_id=614609 Currently, I am using Flash Pro 9 AS 3 Preview: http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/flash9as3preview/ I wanna know how I can execute the unit test by creating a .fla instead of using Flex Builder. Thanks, Keative |

My thoughts were to try wrapping it in something like Screenweaver to keep hold of the process. Unfortunately, there's no Mac version of that yet, so not a good option yet. The other approach is to simply let the flash player process end and keep the socket server up and running. Then have the test case trigger the complete event, send that to the socket server, then it can finish the rest of the Ant task. This should work, but seems like a lot to manage. Any thoughts or suggestions. -Chris |

Hi Chris,
I'll take a look at this and see how you've gone about it... I'm
actually in the middle of comparing flexunit & ASUnit to see how they
compare - I have to admit I really like that flexunit has this
functionality already availible. The thing is , I also really like the
lightweightness of asunit, and that it is decoupled from the flex
framework (and the more enthusiastic community)
Even though I found I could assert outside of a test (ie in a
callback), the problem is that my testRunner needs to know when my
test suite has completed running, and this 'complete' gets triggered
early as the following trace shows (testrunneroutput gets printed when
all tests have completed, but *after* this, we get an assert Failing
that is triggered by my asynchronous call:

Don't forget that there's a big difference between asynchronous and event-driven. The synchronous test runner should support testing event-driven functionality. Occasionally, we have to build a mock object that subclasses the "class under test" and exposes the event triggering features as a test-only interface. I have often found that when I'm doing this, what I am actually testing is the EventDispatcher, not the features that I'm really interested in. But it does make sense in some cases. Usually, I will just subscribe to the event I'm interested in, change the state of the object in the test method, and call "fail()" in my event handler if the state is not expected. This should unwind properly to the output. Writing multiple test methods that work asynchronously is quite a bit more complicated with AsUnit3 because we built it over JUnit which uses exceptions to manage test status. Because of this, once we're executing a test method, we need to unwind the same thread in order to get valid results. I haven't checked out the stuff chris and others have posted, but I hope that helps. Thanks, Luke www.asunit.org |

Wouldn't it be possible to modify the testcase framework to execute different run methods depending on which test is running? Hey Paul, I think you are correct. I'm not looking at the code either, but I do remember at one point the currentMethod property was returning outdated information for asynchronous test failures, so we moved it. I'm not at all confident that it has to be where it is, but if it moves, please make sure asynchronous tests still return valid results. Thanks, Luke www.asunit.org |

I've just been: 1. running all the async calls, 2. setting flags as to how they function as they return, 3. waiting until all sync calls have completed one way or another, 4. calling super.run(), 5. and then testing the flags in my test methods. Other than making a new TestCase for each async call, this seems to be the only way to go, right? You don't get the benefits of setUp() and tearDown() between test methods this way, but, eh, whatever. > > From: "Paul BH" <eye...@gm...> > Date: 2006/06/20 Tue PM 12:56:54 CDT > To: asu...@li... > Subject: Re: [Asunit-users] asyncronous individual test, *not* asynch setup? > > Hi matey - long time no chat... > > I use async tests for testing method calls that you expect to trigger > an event at some time in the future. So lets say for example that I > have a class that takes some xml, does some shizzle with it and > broadcasts an event when its done. > > I would use standard overriding of run to load the xml - so far so > good, but testing that this class dispatches an event when > parseMyStuff gets called is a testMethod specific async case. there > may be another test method within the same testCase that sends its > result immediately, and I certainly wouldnt want to call parseMyStuff > in the setup (as its specific to just one test) > > make sense, or am i just rambling? > > PBH > > On 6/20/06, Alias <ali...@gm...> wrote: > > Hi Paul! > > > > Why can't you override run? Hi matey - long time no chat... I use async tests for testing method calls that you expect to trigger an event at some time in the future. So lets say for example that I have a class that takes some xml, does some shizzle with it and broadcasts an event when its done. I would use standard overriding of run to load the xml - so far so good, but testing that this class dispatches an event when parseMyStuff gets called is a testMethod specific async case. there may be another test method within the same testCase that sends its result immediately, and I certainly wouldnt want to call parseMyStuff in the setup (as its specific to just one test) make sense, or am i just rambling? Hi Paul! Why can't you override run? Where does the result come from? Hello, me again - I have another situation, that Im not sure if anyone has come across / solved? I need to be able to run a test whose result is asynchronous. This is not necessarily the same as an asynchronous setup, so I dont really want to be overriding run (which is what i normally do with an async test...) has anyone done this, got a strategy for doing this in ASUnit (3)? ta PBH |

Hi guys, unless I read how your code works, when you have a testListener (eg a resultPrinter), the following methods get called on it: startTest --addError --addFailure endTest the problem I have found is that the test's currentMethod property (that is externally accessed via getCurrentMethod()) returns null in startTest, as it is only set during (I think) runBare... Im writing this from memory (not at my work machine right now), but is this correct? thx PBH |

Like the other Paul, and johannes, I got it to work with a bit of cleaning... I'm not using your runner / printer, but Im actually looking at using the same runner / printer I built for flexunit (the one that prints out xml formatted stuff for my cruisecontrol thing) for non-visual stuff, and *hopefully* using the flexunit GUI for visual feedback. I'm basically trying to get a setup whereby it doesnt matter which framework you use, you still have the same feedback / level of detail... i did this in my templates for as3, and also altered the code to make it work properly. my display is still fubar, but i am checking it onto our public svn today (not the asunit one). Hey Ali, I have tried and am currently running the framework w/ beta 3. I did have to change a few things to get it to work. Pretty minor stuff... change util to utils, remove delete calls, etc. Was curious if this had already been done and was just not released yet. Sounds like it hasn't. best, Paul Ali Mills wrote: > Hey Paul, > > We don't have an official beta 3 port, but I think that AsUnit for > ActionScript 3.0 should still work. I'll double check tonight.
