I tried the geni586-serial version on my net5501 and it worked fine (serial console).  I don't have a video console to test the geni586 but suspect it is OK.

I used a SanDisk Ultra II 2GB card.

Could you have a much larger capacity CF card 8GB, 16GB, etc. ?, there could be an issue with the BIOS of your box for the larger sizes.
