did you see the green text on my first mail? no, you didn't, because you are focused against microsoft and so on(like=20 html mails). your problem is your and only your, the mails are sended from=20 thunderbird, not from a microsoft software. just for now, forget me and just have a look at the mail archives, you=20 will see a lot of my unreadable mails. also, you will rarely see microsoft addicts on this list, afaik,=20 astlinux is not really a microsoft addicts software. as far as I have seen, many more questions from you than answers. then please, stop that now and be kind, better for all. kind regards, Olivier ps: i will not answer to any further attacks Carla Schroder a =E9crit : > I don't want to start a stupid flamewar, so I'm going to list a few rea= sons=20 > why HTML mails suck, especially for mailing lists, then go away: > > 1. I don't want to start a stupid flamewar, so I'm going to list a few reasons why HTML mails suck, especially for mailing lists, then go away: 1. HTML adds nothing useful to the content, just lard 2. It's primarily a spam and malware vector. Not so much as it used to be, but it's still enough of a problem that for most of my customers I run Mimedefang and other tools to strip tags and attachments. All kinds of fun things lurk inside HTML spams, like Web bugs and download links to more malware. It's so much fun wasting billable hours on junk like that 3. Microsoft HTML is the worst offender- it rarely renders correctly on non-Microsoft mail clients, so all you see are masses of tags with the message buried somewhere deep inside 4. It sucks to read in text mail clients 5. It doesn't render in Web archives, so again all you see are masses of tags surrounding the actual messages 6. Text is universal and can be read by anyone anywhere That's why I don't like HTML email, and usually bitbucket it. Obviously I'm not the boss of anyone, and what people choose to use is up to them. 'Nuff said, and I shall now grumble quietly to myself. :) -- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Carla Schroder Linux geek and random computer tamer check out my Linux Cookbook! http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/linuxckbk/ best book for sysadmins and power users ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ |

mine did use exactly the same syntax as yours :) A copy paste... If mine wasn't polite, what about your? Html mails are quite usuals right now, as well as internet, voip and so=20 on, even thunderbird is able to do that... Back to the stone age? Anyway, it wasn't an help request but an answer to an help request. Kind regards, ps: Just for you, this email is Text/Html compliant :) Carla Schroder a =C3=A9crit : > It was a polite request, and it's standard list etiquette to use plain = text.=20 > Since you can't handle that, I can't be bothered to read your messages = or try=20 > to help. It was a polite request, and it's standard list etiquette to use plain text= =2E=20 Since you can't handle that, I can't be bothered to read your messages or t= ry=20 to help. Responding to myself, After some testing, I do not recommend these sound files. This is not a re-record in native formats. Many sounds are incorrect or missing data. Sorry... back to the old GSM "extras". This is as I suspected, although it does make me wonder why my (much cheaper!) Netgear router copes with it all right - presumably it contains special hardware. This in turn makes me wonder whether the net4801 was a good choice of hardware for this sort of thing. Anyway, I think I can avoid all the speed problems by simply connecting my Netgear router downstream from the astlinux box, with my PCs connected to the router and my phones to the astlinux box. It's twice as much cable but what the heck. The net4801 can ROUTE at about 40 mbit/sec between interfaces. That's pretty good. Chances are your Netgear can't get anywhere close to that. However, your Netgear probably also has a layer two switch built in. Switches have ASICs to do simple ethernet switching at wire speed - 100 mbit/sec. Comparing the throughput of a router to a dumb switch is nowhere near a fair fight... Do a speed test with the Netgear routing - from the "Internet" interface to any port on the switch and see how fast it is... > I'm a bit puzzled that PBX-only mode is now the default, since that implies no traffic shaping, which I would have thought would guarantee problems whenever a big download or upload was in progress. What do people do in this situation? Use a separate internet connection? Or a clever router? PBX-Only is the default in terms of configuration but all of the functionality is still there. All you have to do is make sure the box has two ethernet adapters (your net4801 has three), and uncomment INTIF in rc.conf. Now you are in router mode. To activate traffic shaping, simply define EXTUP and EXTDOWN. > Anyway, I now want to enable the other ethernet ports on my box, and it's not obvious how to do this from reading rc.conf. My net4801 has seven ports (which now looks like a mistake). Assuming I was happy with slower speeds I still don't see how I can configure the unit to connect several phones or PCs to it. Is there a hidden assumption here that I'm missing, that an external router is always used? In PBX-only mode the phones connect to the EXTERNAL interface (the only one active by default), right? So the asterisk box is just another device on the internal LAN, rather than being physically connected between the phones and the external internet as I had assumed. If so, then I think I need to buy yet another router. :-( If your net4801 has seven ports you must have added the four port ethernet adapter. That's great, except that (like I mentioned above), you will never see the same level of performance from this sollution. Even IF you were to bridge the ports together to act like a switch, the speed would be nowhere near wire speed on your net4801: http://facweb.cti.depaul.edu/jyu/Publications/Yu-Linux-TSM2004.pdf As you can see, these tests were conducted with a 1.2ghz Duron processor with TWO ethernet ports. Your 266mhz Geode has seven :). > I hope this is all clear. Maybe a couple of diagrams would help: > > 1. I can't get this to work, following the instructions on = http://www.voip-info.org/wiki/index.php?page=3DAstLinux+Keydisk. =20 I can create the partition on the CF card (I only bought a 48 meg one, = but I think there's still enough room as long as I don't use voicemail = or store phone configurations). Happy New Year everybody, and thanks for all your replies to my earlier = query on this subject on the old mailing list.=20 =20 I've held off replying while I did a bit more research about using = astlinux as a router, to avoid making a complete fool of myself in = public. But I still don't understand it all, so here goes anyway. :-) =20 I've got no problem with throttling my external connection to 90% of the = available bandwidth to avoid queueing problems. Obviously it would be = nice to have a system that copes with congestion without configuration, = but I can live with it.=20 =20 I've discovered elsewhere that the net4801 won't cope with 100 Mbit/s = ethernet routing (between PCs on my SoHo LAN) but should cope with my 4 = Mbit/s internet connection OK. This is as I suspected, although it does = make me wonder why my (much cheaper!) Netgear router copes with it all = right - presumably it contains special hardware. This in turn makes me = wonder whether the net4801 was a good choice of hardware for this sort = of thing. Anyway, I think I can avoid all the speed problems by simply = connecting my Netgear router downstream from the astlinux box, with my = PCs connected to the router and my phones to the astlinux box. It's = twice as much cable but what the heck. I'm a bit puzzled that PBX-only mode is now the default, since that = implies no traffic shaping, which I would have thought would guarantee = problems whenever a big download or upload was in progress. What do = people do in this situation? Use a separate internet connection? Or a = clever router? Anyway, I now want to enable the other ethernet ports on my box, and = it's not obvious how to do this from reading rc.conf. My net4801 has = seven ports (which now looks like a mistake). Assuming I was happy with = slower speeds I still don't see how I can configure the unit to connect = several phones or PCs to it. Is there a hidden assumption here that I'm = missing, that an external router is always used? In PBX-only mode the = phones connect to the EXTERNAL interface (the only one active by = default), right? So the asterisk box is just another device on the = internal LAN, rather than being physically connected between the phones = and the external internet as I had assumed. If so, then I think I need = to buy yet another router. :-( I hope this is all clear. Maybe a couple of diagrams would help: 1. This is how I originally expected to connect things: __________ =20 | |----IP Phone INTERNET---| astlinux |----IP Phone ... | box |----Computer |__________|----Computer ... 2. I now think PBX-only mode is meant to be connected like this: ________ | Router |----IP Phone | |----IP Phone ... INTERNET---| | __________ | |---| astlinux | | | | box | |________| |__________| 3. And this is how I now think the PCs should be connected: ________ | Router |----IP Phone | |----IP Phone INTERNET---| | __________ ________ | |---| astlinux |----| Fast |----Computer | | | box | | Router |----Computer ... |________| |__________| |________| Does that make sense? -- Phil McKerracher www.mckerracher.net |

Morning, Some additional information that might help The jffs2 file is 10.6 MB. Does this seem about right for a default config image? If so, it would seem that it could fit directly into the Gumstix Flash and load from there. ( I have not tried this yet) I did locate the mkimage tool in the staging_dir/bin and ran it on the jffs2 image. It got me past the Bad Magic Number issue when I try to boot it. This time however, it errors with an invalid instruction. I used a load address of a2000000 and and entry point of a2000000 and specified no compression as parameters to mkimage. Of course, if my original image is bad, nothing is going to work. Do any gumstix factory images exist yet? Any pointers? To reduce spam guessing, my mail domains reject all mail not exactly addressed to known users. The sourceforge lists require a posting email to have a 'postmaster' user in the same domain (or sub-domain) as the sender. (There are RFC's that say a 'postmaster' user should be defined, but I have never quite understood why.) After defining a 'postmaster' user in my mail system, I was able to post to this new list I am just curious the logic of requiring the 'postmaster' and not creating a spam email channel. Morning! Once again I need some help to proceed. I am trying to boot Astlinux from a CF card on a Netstix system. I have run: make make jffs2root and now have a .jffs2 file. I copied this to a CF card, renamed to uImage, along with a U-boot script to boot the image. U-boot recognizes the CF card and runs my script and attempts to load the image but then fails with "Bad Magic Number." I don't know where this magic number is to be set or how to proceed from here. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks! John I am running U-Boot r1161 from the gumstix factory images the u-boot script is echo "Booting Astlinux System..." set workedok Failed if fatload ide 0 a2000000 uImage; then set workedok Success fi bootm a2000000 |

Kristian, I am curious if there are any major challenges merging asterisk 1.4 into AstLinux? Just some small hurdles or are there mountains to climb? Thanks, Lonnie PS: Interesting lists.sourceforge.net requires me to have a postmaster address. Do most people here simply auto-delete all postmaster mail? This seems very attractive to spammers. |
