What about this: ASTERISK_USER=root ASTERISK_GROUP=root At least this way we accomplish two things - 1) We know the user wants to start Asterisk 2) They can run it under alternate credentials if desired If they didn't define either (upgrade with old keydisk, for instance) I'd like to make the asterisk init script say something clever and warn the user that they aren't running Asterisk on AstLinux ;)! That's more similar to the other packages (openvpn, for instance). What do you think? -- Kristian Kielhofner |

I'd like Kristian's input on this one. We'd need a variable in rc.conf to not start asterisk. Then a check in the asterisk init script to check for this variable and exit cleanly if it's found. There may be another way to accomplish this though. We may want a list of services which should be started at boot or perhaps a list of disabled services. It would be nice to include openser in the stock Astlinux image, but if both asterisk and openser are started, there may be some issues. As a reminder, what Lonnie is doing is using an instance of Astlinux to provide an openvpn end point. He didn't want asterisk started. (no need to in this case). Darrick, Thanks... quick look, looks great. 1) Line 94 of your /etc/init.d/openvpn needs another "fi" 94: fi 95: fi 96: } 2) So if I include "sysctl -w net.ipv4.ip_forward=1" on my rc.local keydisk, no problem that this gets called a bunch of times? 3) How about my NO_ASTERISK (exit) variable in /etc/init.d/asterisk ? This includes a modified init script, the inclusion of only easy-rsa version 2 scripts, changes to rc.conf for a few additional variables and the possibility of using your own openvpn.conf file from the key disk. One key setting that I did not include is the enabling of ip_forwarding. While this is required if you want openvpn to route to other pc's on the network, this should be enabled by the firewall. Does anyone know if AstLinux will support NVFaxDetect? I took a look in the development environment and didn't see it as an option. I would like to provide faxing with SIP connections with G711U. Thanks, Kevin |

Kristian, The output is: Class 0200: 10ec:8167 (rev 10) Subsystem: 16f3:10ec. Thanks for all. I hope next revision will be ready soon. Without NIC I can't test the system. Hi Kristian, thanks for your quick reply Not works. Appears in lsmod but not used. In lspci appears like a RTL-8169SC. About LCD In the web page: http://www.mini-box.com/picoLCD-20x2-OEM?sc=8&category=490 Say that it's not compatible (in development). I have never used a LCD in linux. What do you think about the possibility to make a daily image file? Hi, I have bought this Mini-ITX mother board: https://linitx.com/product_info.php?cPath=12_138&products_id=1178 The problem is that this board has Dual RealteK RTL8110SC 10/100/1000 and when starts AstLinux 0.4.4 not detect these NIC. Please, it's possible to include the drivers in the next release? When will be ready the next release? I'm trying to use the development environment but with many problems and errors. Someone is using this LCD? Can send me more details? Thanks, Manuel Manuel, Try to "modprobe r8169". There is an improved version in 2.6.19.2 and later (I'm working on 2.6.20 right now). With regards to the original question - why do you need to transcode at all? I use g729 quite a bit, and I have not needed to transcode on an Asterisk system for quite some time. It takes a bit of tweaking, but it can be done. -- Kristian Kielhofner |

Hi David, there is only one answer to your question: buy a g729 license from Digium! This works out-of-box with Astlinux. A nice register utility is included. There were already several threads in this mailing list and on the asterisk-users which discussed this topic in detail (pros and cons, legal, technical, etc.). Please have a look in the archives. cheers, Ingmar David Caldwell wrote: > Thankyou Kris and Olivier for you responses regarding codecs for the > Aastra 9133i stations. Hello everyone, Now that astlinux-trunk has been coming along very nicely, I thought I would try to add support for hard realtime capabilities to AstLinux. If everything works (and there are no problems with zaptel), with a little tweaking this should improve the audio quality on systems with high loads (and probably any system at that) - especially if it is finely tuned and has zaptel cards. The stats: - Asterisk 1.2.14 - Zaptel 1.2.13 - Kernel 2.6.20 - rt patch 2.6.20-rt5 - everything else from AstLinux... If you would like to hack on this, give the astlinux rt branch a try: svn co https://astlinux.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/astlinux/branches/rt astlinux-rt If you just want to try it on something, I made a bootable iso ("make iso" from the devel environment). Get it here: http://www.krisk.org/astlinux/astlinux-rt-r588.iso (sorry about the krisk.org domain - I don't feel like dealing with SourceForge right now) Further reading: http://rt.wiki.kernel.org/index.php/RT_PREEMPT_HOWTO http://people.redhat.com/mingo/realtime-preempt/ http://rlove.org/schedutils/ I'm looking for any and all suggestions from Asterisk code gurus - what things can we do in Asterisk/Zaptel to maximize the potential when running with RT PREEMPT? Thanks, I look forward to hearing what everyone has to say. -- Kristian Kielhofner |

You do not mention if you changed the order in the Aastra phone itself. You= do need to change it in the Aastra section in sip.conf and the order in the= phone itself. The codec that is used is the first one combinable on both= devices. > Hi guys, > > I've had a search through the list for this problem, but couldn't > find an answer. Hello all, Bonjour seems like a great way to advertise the presence of Asterisk and to point users in the right direction. But what about the reverse? Could Bonjour be used to listen for a SIP phone that advertised its presence? A simple scenario is having phones advertise themselves through Bonjour, listing up their management interfaces (http, https, telnet, etc). A PHP webpage takes the Bonjour information, and presents properly formated links to the services of the devices AstLinux can see. So, clicking a devices link will allow access to the device. I may be asking too much here, but what sort of functionality would be needed on the phone and in AstLinux to allow for client/server discovery, and possibly partial or full configuration/provisioning of a phone from an AstLinux box, in a generic manner? Bonjour seems to be a pretty device agnostic way of potentially accomplishing that. Am I missing something here? Thank you for your time. Ben |

Mark Weisler, In my situation, I use another net4801 box to run m0n0wall. QoS and much more. WAN, LAN and DMZ ports. Your suspicions are correct, QoS is very important in the home environment. There are less expensive solutions for a router/firewall. Linksys routers with alternative firmware has such QoS features. Some people have good luck with that... do your research. One solution, not to be overlooked, is configuring the net4801 AstLinux as a router with QoS traffic shaping in addition to asterisk. I don't use this, personally, but I have heard of others that do. This solution requires some extra technical experience. As you can tell, I really like the embedded box solution. The upfront cost is more, but in most of these situations reliability is top priority. I have an extra net4801 sitting on the bench, for testing and backup in the unlikely event one dies. At a moments notice this spare box can run m0n0wall, AstLinux asterisk or an AstLinux OpenVPN server. The net4801's coming-out-of-my-ears has worked well for me. The extra upfront cost can be though of as an insurance policy. This is one solution that has worked well for me.
