Curious what I can do about this message. I'm using a DSLR so it is not at a controlled temperature. I realize the flat and lights are at different temperatures, but it is what I have to play with right now.
What does it mean to "De-classify flat filter"?

Flats do not have to be the same termparature. So that does nto matte.r
You would only check this if you are using a mono camera. What it deos is looks at the metta data of each file and then combines the green flats with green lights, red flats with Red light frames. Etc.
This is proabbly the coolest thing about astap since it makes stacking mono data just as easy as a OSC DSLR.

But what is it you check or uncheck? The closest thing I see is the the "Classify by" section at the bottom of the stack menu window. But currently all are unchecked. So how do I "decassify" a filter?

Yes I agree the message is confusing. it better remove the declassify part of the message. but it report that it can't find a flat. Most likely it is looking for a 1/4 size flat since it is green only so a TG.fits file.
Assuming that is the problem, the easiest way is to calibrate the images first with darks, flats and
flat-darks/bias. So load the orginal lights in light tab, the darks in dark tab, flats in the flat tab, flat-darks/bias in the flat-dark tab.
Then select in tab stack method "calibration only". This will convert all images to something ending with ..._cal.fits
The calibrated lights load them in the photometry tab. You can do that directly from the result tab or just browse for them. In photometry tab select select extract green. Then you have new image ending with _cal_tg.fits.
That should work for you.

I would concur with the original poster (and with Han). The message is confusing. Taking it further, suppose that I, a raw noob to all this, took images without any darks or flats, is stacking basically a waste of time, a lesson for next time?

It now worked after deleting the master darks and flats and changing the Raw conversion method to LibRaw (cropped active area) from LibRaw (full active area).
At first, I had tried to use DCRaw as recommended by this StarTools page.
But this gave me an access violation error when trying to STACK (Sigma clip average), similar to this ticket.
I've now deleted all converted FIT(s) files and masters and starting again from scratch from the camera raw images using only LibRaw (cropped active area).

Yes the size of the light/dark should be identical. Cropped Libraw is the way to go. Else you will see for for some raw types an unused black area which could confuse the background measurement.

Classify is checked.
So declassify is the same as "not checked" or "unchecked".
