I had a similar problem and when I looked into it, the incoming sessions were sticking and timing out. Hence the sender thought the mail had not gone through (which was correct) and kept resending, with the same result until the sender gave up. I believe it was because of the SSL problems in version 1. I basically gave up with Version 1 and upgraded to ASSP Version 2 and touch wood haven't noticed the problem since.
