I changed another config option and saved and my ldap password was again instantly converted to the encrypted version (after listening to my hard drive grind for a couple of seconds, and I'm not short on RAM or disk space [which is real-time defragged]). I then opened ASSP up in IE7 and made the same changes, but the ldap password was not changed (and no hard drive grinding...which I suppose is related to the password encryption method).
