Hi, everyone! I'm new to this subject and there's just too much information out there... it's hard to know what's current and what's not...
This is what's going on for me - Windows 10(1067) - x64:
1)I removed Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable(MS_VC++2010Redist) - x86 and x64;
2)Installed DirectX 10 SDK; (it wouldn't complete if I hadn't removed (MS_VC++2010Redist) - x86 and x64;
3)Installed (MS_VC++2010Redist) - x86 and x64 back;
4)Open CMake(v3.7.2) and set unzipped "Assimp 3.3.1" path as source directory and build directory some place else;
5)Hit Configure in CMake;
6)Not Found: offset x64, zlib, GIT_EXECUTABLE;
7)Tried frustrating different solutions, none gave me a 100% OK CMake compilation;
8)I gave up, and opened Assimp.sln in Visual Studio 2017 anyway and compiled it;
9)I looked for the assimp.dll and the assimp.lib files, but all I found were assimp-VC140-mt.dll and assimp-VC140-mt.lib;
10)Are all the steps above expected and correct?
11)Should I ignore those "not found" files?
12)Should I look for them somewhere else?
13)Am I supposed to rename those files to assimp.dll and assimp.lib and then link them properly in Visual Studio?
14)So many questions, I know... I'm late for this party... thanks for your time!

Hi, even I am struggling with this. Below is my state (a bit better).:
On Windows 10 x64:
removed Miscrosoft Visual C++ 2010 (x86 & x64)
Installed DirectX 10 SDK
Installed MS VC++ 2010 Redis. - x86 & x64
Open CMake (3.8.0) and set the unzipped "Assimp 3.3.1" as path as Source and had a build directory separate
After hitting Configure, thre were no errors. So, I hit Generate which also (in my 5th attempt) got successfully completed.
After this, I opened the .sln file in VS2013 and did a BUILD. Everything ran successfully, the Output console read Build: 8 succeeded, 0 failed, 0 up-to-date, 0 skipped, but then I get an error alert stating Unable to start program 'D:/<folder>/assimp-3.3.1\build\Debug\ALL_BUILD'.
I wanted to use the Assimp library in my own C++ project. And, I am lost after this. If anyone can guide me on this. It would be of great help.

So, folks, here I am after updating CMake to 3.8.0. My results were the same as I had had before, with CMake 3.7.2. In my first post, I forgot to add "ptrhead.h" to the list of "Not Found" files from CMake. It just happened again with 3.8.0.
I wonder if System Language could have any sort of influence... My Windows 10 is set to Portuguese... I really don't know what's going on. I followed all the steps I could gather, what am I missing? Once more, thanks for your time.

I haven't used assimp in Visual Studio for a while, but here are some things that I remember that may be helpful:
Generally you don't have to worry about things that are listed as "Not Found". CMake will throw an explicit error if something that is critical to successful compilation is not found.
When running CMake to build Assimp, I would suggest turning the following options off unless you really want them: ASSIMP_BUILD_ASSIMP_VIEW (then you dont need the DirectX SDK), ASSIMP_BUILD_ASSIMP_TOOLS, ASSIMP_BUILD_SAMPLES (which requires glut) and ASSIMP_BUILD_TESTS (which require GTest).
In Visual Studio:
Diffirent version of Visual Studio are usually not binary compatible , so the compiled libraries are postfixed with vc70 ... vc150 indicating the Visual Studio version used for compiling. (This avoids the aptly named DLL / Dependency Hell situation.)
You need to select the Build Type (Debug, Release, ), Architecture(Win32, Win64) and Active Project (ALL_BUILD, assimp, INSTALL, uninstall, ....). The key here is the Active Project. Since Assimp is a library (and most other are build scripts), it wont have anything to run. If you compiled the viewer and your set it to your active project, then the viewer application should start up.
To install the libraries, you need to either Right Click -> Build the INSTALL target, or set it to the startup project and compile. (Running it will simply give you an error.) Visual Studio will install the files to the directory you specified in CMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX. I think the default is C:/Program Files(x86)/Assimp. In Windows 7+ I'm not sure it will be able to install to this directory without running Visual Studio in Administrator mode. (Visual Studio will need elivated permisions or explicit permissions set for system and protected directories.) So I would suggest you set it to something like CMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX=C:/Development/Libraries.
Once you did the above step, if you navigate to the installation directory, you should see three sub directories: bin (this is where the viewer application, assimp tools and assimp dll is), include (where the assimp headers are) and lib (where the compiled library file is). The files in lib will be named something like assimp-vc140-mt.lib which reflects the visual studio version (vc140 = Visual Studio 2015) and I believe the runt time library (mt = multi threaded).
In your new Visual Studio project that uses assimp, you need to add the include, lib and bin paths in order to compile, line and run respectively. Note that in order to use DLLs, you still need to link againts the .lib file.
The code examples on the assimp page should compile, link and run at this point.

Thanks a lot for the input. I tweaked a few things in VS2017, and I guess it worked for me this time around. I say "guess" because I haven't tested it yet in OpenGL, but I finally got these files generated:
VS2017 supports CMake, so I can't tell if this solution will help Farhan in VS2013.
Here it goes:
1)I changed nothing in CMake, I simply rebuilt v3.1.1 as before, got the same "not found" messages;
2)In VS2017, I opened "Assimp.sln", then from the top menu bar, I selected "Project" and then "Properties";
3)In Properties, it was not necessary for me to sellect Win32 or Win64, it was automatically set depending on whichever "Assimp.sln" I had chosen;
4)Still inside "Properties", I reconfigured Compilation Mode to "Release"(default was "Debug") and I had to do it each time I opened a different .sln;
5)Then I Right-Clicked INSTALL, instead of ALL, and chose Build;
I got: compile 8 successful, 0 fail, 0 ignored.
I also tried to deal with ASSIMPv3.3.1, but I confess I'm exhausted, I think I made a few mistakes along the way... there were a few C4267 warnings(type convertion - possible data loss) in the x86 compile, and many of them in the x64 one. I'll get back to it tomorrow.
The positive results are enough for me to sleep better tonight, it really felt like a had hit a wall!

Hi, guys, I've got some more feedback for Assimp 3.1.1 and Assimp 3.3.1, x86 and x64:
1)In CMake, I unchecked the options Vinnie pointed out, except for ASSIMP_BUILD_ASSIMP_VIEW. DirectX 10 SDK is already installed, so I didn't see the point;
2)Still in CMake, I changed "CMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX=" path. Then I commited to this Configuration and hit Generate;
3)In VS2017, I set Build Mode to Release, right-clicked on Install and then finally Build.
As Vinnie mentioned, VS2017 picked up the paths previously defined in CMake. So, in the end, I had each build organized exactly where I wanted. I had created exclusive paths for Assimp 3.1.1(build x86), 3.1.1(build x64), 3.3.1(build x86) and 3.3.1(build x86).
Once again, thanks for your attention.
PS.: I got (C4267) - type convertion warnings from all builds, except for the Assimp 3.1.1 (x86). I saved all the info. from VS. Please, let me know if you'd like to have a look at those warning messages or any other detail and I'll post them here.

Thanks a lot for the input. I tweaked a few things in VS2017, and I guess it worked for me this time around. I say "guess" because I haven't tested it yet in OpenGL, but I finally got these files generated:

VS2017 supports CMake, so I can't tell if this solution will help Farhan in VS2013.
Here it goes:
1)I changed nothing in CMake, I simply rebuilt v3.1.1 as before, got the same "not found" messages;
2)In VS2017, I opened "Assimp.sln", then from the top menu bar, I selected "Project" and then "Properties";
3)In Properties, it was not necessary for me to sellect Win32 or Win64, it was automatically set depending on whichever "Assimp.sln" I had chosen;
4)Still inside "Properties", I reconfigured Compilation Mode to "Release"(default was "Debug") and I had to do it each time I opened a different .sln;
5)Then I Right-Clicked INSTALL, instead of ALL, and chose Build;
I got: compile 8 successful, 0 fail, 0 ignored.
I also tried to deal with ASSIMPv3.3.1, but I confess I'm exhausted, I think I made a few mistakes along the way... there were a few C4267 warnings(type convertion - possible data loss) in the x86 compile, and many of them in the x64 one. I'll get back to it tomorrow.
The positive results are enough for me to sleep better tonight, it really felt like a had hit a wall!

Hi, guys, I've got some more feedback for Assimp 3.1.1 and Assimp 3.3.1, x86 and x64:
1)In CMake, I unchecked the options Vinnie pointed out, except for ASSIMP_BUILD_ASSIMP_VIEW. DirectX 10 SDK is already installed, so I didn't see the point;
2)Still in CMake, I changed "CMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX=" path. Then I commited to this Configuration and hit Generate;
3)In VS2017, I set Build Mode to Release, right-clicked on Install and then finally Build.
As Vinnie mentioned, VS2017 picked up the paths previously defined in CMake. So, in the end, I had each build organized exactly where I wanted. I had created exclusive paths for Assimp 3.1.1(build x86), 3.1.1(build x64), 3.3.1(build x86) and 3.3.1(build x86).
Once again, thanks for your attention.
PS.: I got (C4267) - type convertion warnings from all builds, except for the Assimp 3.1.1 (x86). I saved all the info. from VS. Please, let me know if you'd like to have a look at those warning messages or any other detail and I'll post them here.
