how do we create an archetype in that case?

I tried going back to my old settings(without artifactory), but it wouldn't
work.  So i deleted my local repository created during artifactory, and then
tried, and now it worked.  

I don't understand the logic behind it.  Does the repository contain any
information about artifactory?  Why didn't maven look into central in the
first place?  But did so when I removed all reference to the old repository?
