The mac dialog box that is being used to select files
for backup only shows currently visible files. So
there is no way to select things like /etc or
/usr/local or even to backup the whole drive by
selecting /.
This seems like a bug, although I suppose it could be a
feature request instead.

Personally, I'd consider this a feature request. ;)
I'll probably try to integrate it somehow into the next 'majorish' release (which
will probably be in a month or so time. Hopefully. Exams for both me and the
other dev...) along with the interface changes required to support SSH
capabilities. Thanks for the feedback and I'll definitely remember this request.

To equivocate:
I'm afraid that we won't be implement this any time soon since it involves
writing our own NSSavePanel subclass. Which is hard. The only
implementation I know of is in TextMate and I find it unlikely that we'd get any
code from there.

Try cmd + shift + g and typing the name of the folder you want to back up. It's
not a great solution, but should hopefully work.
