No, not to my knowledge. Well, I did not do it and I found no
switch at crucial points in the explosion or cycle code. Of
course, if you define USE_PARTICLES when compiling luci's
experimental particle system will be used which I think is
barely visible...

Duh, yes, it was done silently by K. And yes, it does look odd
when the cycle just disappears. But I guess that's OK since its
the option is only for those who want to squeeze out every
frame they can, there have to be sacrifices made.
