I changed the full screen settings to confined window
property instead (640x480). A local game works fine but
connecting to an internet game freezes/locks up the PC.
Requires reboot.

Then: Huh? How can these two things be possibly related? (
Read that as a question to myself ) Have you tried
fullscreen mode internet play? Did it happen once or
repeatedly? ( Of course, I am not asking you to
intentionally crash your computer... )
Generally, there has to be a Hardware/Driver/OS bug
involved. No application alone can completely freeze an
otherwise stable computer.
