Dear Open Source developer I am doing a research project on "Fun and Software Development" in which I kindly invite you to participate. You will find the online survey under http://fasd.ethz.ch/qsf/. The questionnaire consists of 53 questions and you will need about 15 minutes to complete it. With the FASD project (Fun and Software Development) we want to define the motivational significance of fun when software developers decide to engage in Open Source projects. What is special about our research project is that a similar survey is planned with software developers in commercial firms. This procedure allows the immediate comparison between the involved individuals and the conditions of production of these two development models. Thus we hope to obtain substantial new insights to the phenomenon of Open Source Development. With many thanks for your participation, Benno Luthiger PS: The results of the survey will be published under http://www.isu.unizh.ch/fuehrung/blprojects/FASD/. We have set up the mailing list fa...@we... for this study. Please see http://fasd.ethz.ch/qsf/mailinglist_en.html for registration to this mailing list. _______________________________________________________________________ Benno Luthiger Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich 8092 Zurich Mail: benno.luthiger(at)id.ethz.ch _______________________________________________________________________ |

Do your text processing, then convert it back to whatever multibyte encoding is being used, be it utf-8 or cp1256, etc. When you say wihin 'the programs', I'm not sure what that refers to. Are you talking about your own code, some other program you're using, or what exactly? later --=20 ------------------------------------------------------- | Mohammed Elzubeir | Visit us at: | | | http://www.arabeyes.org/ | | Arabeyes Project | Homepage: | | Unix the 'right' way | http://fakkir.net/~elzubeir/| ------------------------------------------------------- --- Was I helpful? Salam, I'm trying to get arabic to work on linux. The HOWTO is a little bit confusing. 1 - I don't know how to check for the options of the linux kernel, any help is appreciated. 2 - Orbit link is not working, on my Debian machine I installed the Orbit package but when I tried to install the Akka package it complained about fribidi (I don't know where to get the Debian package from since I installed the fribidi libs but I doubt the package manager in Debian would knows about it) 3 - Installed Akka the tar way and now it complains about Orbit. 4 - SWIG installed fine but I don't know what Akka is going to say about it. I'm not that familiar with Linux coding may be Mohammed can shed some light here. I find it strange to find an ORB broker required in such an application? Regards, -- Mohammad J. Hi all, I followed your discussions since Arabeyes began, but Linux is not my=20 field, so I did not, and cannot, contribute anything but my experience with open source projects. I started the ArabTeX project sometime around 1991 (it is concerned = with typesetting in the Arabic script and its extensions using the TeX = system) and I consider it successful. The system is publicly available on our=20 server (ask me if you are interested, by personal EMail) and some = mirrors.=20 We had around 10000(!) downloads on the local server alone and=20 NOT A SINGLE request for a printed manual, even at a nominal fee!=20 I learned some lessons on the way. Lesson one: people take anything that is free for granted. Lesson two: hunters and gatheres abound. Downloads prove nothing. Lesson three: there ARE serious users, and you can identify them by=20 the fact that they stumble over bugs and complain. Forget the rest. (Note: if there are too few bugs, you will never know your users :-) Lesson four: you MIGHT get compliments, but no donations and no help. (Note: you might get a complimentary copy of scientific work, if you explicitly ask for it, and your wish is reasonable) Conclusion: if you want something to happen, MAKE it happen and be prepared to do EVERYTHING yourself. If you should get help, so the better, but do not rely on it. Take your time, and try to get as much fun and satisfaction from your work as possible; this is the best=20 thing you can get! Salam Guys, Just to keep you update, I'm currently emailing you from Ximian Evolution on my Redhat box (I have another that I'll try Debian on). So now I'll dig through your documents to install the Arabic language and get more familiar with CVS. My plan is by end of this weekend go over the code (I'm more of a coder but I'll try to also help in the arabization since it seems the need is there for it) and then I'll post on the Developer questions in order to kick in. Regards, Mohammed J. Saleh P.S. Redhat a long way since my experience in 1997~, any plans on arabizing Blue Curve? _______________________________________________ General mailing list Ge...@ar... http://lists.arabeyes.org/mailman/listinfo/general |
