Dear Open Source developer I am doing a research project on "Fun and Software Development" in which I kindly invite you to participate. You will find the online survey under http://fasd.ethz.ch/qsf/. The questionnaire consists of 53 questions and you will need about 15 minutes to complete it. With the FASD project (Fun and Software Development) we want to define the motivational significance of fun when software developers decide to engage in Open Source projects. What is special about our research project is that a similar survey is planned with software developers in commercial firms. This procedure allows the immediate comparison between the involved individuals and the conditions of production of these two development models. Salam,
I'm using Active State's Perl 5.8 on my Win2K AS machine.
I have a file that has a list of countries as an option list which I
want to extract, and put each option in a line and add a closing
</option> tag.
After trying for hours I got this script, which worked fine except that
it repeats any line that has an ending \n (newline).

Salam, You did a great job ! I tested duali with a CP1256 file downloaded from the net and it (he ?) seems to be happy about it: no error outputs, no spelling errors etc. So I guess the file was OK in spelling. Maybe I should hack it so it would contain intentional faults and see what Mr duali says... I have 3 remarks though. They are all +/- related to user-friendliness... I am not sure you want to hear them ? OK, I can't resist the need to tell about them :-)) 1- Why does the INSTALL file say 'download the data files and create them' while they are easily created from the data/ directory ? 2- If the user doesn't specify the good encoding, the program outputs some python error lines. Maybe this could be changed so it would outputs only 1-2 understand-able line(s). 3- Oops... I totally forgot about it. I should have noted it. I'm sure I had a third remark. I will hopefully remember it :-) Anyway, if you want my opinion, I encourage you to port it to C++. Let's see it in action in some text-editor (katoob ?) and maybe with a suggestion(s)-when-a-spell-error-occurs feature ;-) In the meanwhile, if pyduali suggests corrections in the command line, I think it would be 'fully' use-able as is (in its python implementation). Ofcourse, I have check the duali.conf file and read all the instructions =

and still I get the same error.
If I try to use Linux or Cygwin I get the error that I don't have =
bsddb3, so I downloaded the file and tried it on both and got this =
message:

Can't find a local BerkeleyDB installation.
(suggestion: try the --berkeley-db=3D/path/to/bsddb option)
The problem here is that I'm sure DB2 is installed but don't know where =
or how I can find the path to it.

The issue is rather complicated but what warranted the removals was the questioning of the source of all those files and whether they had been inspected/certified or looked into in any great detail for content/correctness, etc. The following suggestion was put forth - "why not go to the Al-Azhar and actually talk to someone in the know who could lead us to proper locations to find 'accepted' translations ?" I'm not sure if this will happen, but certainly its an option worth pursuing (I'm also sure we can get advice from the various online websites that offer Q&A/discussion-forum sections). I also suggest we use info that is posted of reputable sites and that are cross-posted (meaning, the info is available from multiple locations and so there is a level of safety in that). Some sites that I can suggest (and they ought to be contacted to see how best to proceed and whether they themselves have any info on "proper" Quranic translations), http://islamicity.com/mosque/quran/ http://quran.al-islam.com/Default.asp (note right menus) http://www.al-sunnah.com/quran.htm http://www.quraan.com (note top-left menu) http://www.usc.edu/dept/MSA/quran/ http://www.islamonline.net/surah/english/quran.shtml http://www.islamway.com (site was down at time of writing) As I'm sure there are others -- the point is to make sure that the translations are proper (and have been looked into by someone as I'm confident there is a proper authority that looks at these things - I'm just unsure who it is - there are plenty of online sites to ask for such info) and to develop either a license which bars modification and/or that clearly states whom to contact and where the data came from. I second that. I think there is a need to standardize the "extensions" to Unicode Arabic for the purpose of encoding the Quran. Right now it seems like every other company is extending Unicode with their own custom codepoints. These extra codepoints needed for Quran encoding could be standardized, first not as a part of the Unicode specification (since it takes a good number of years to get codepoints accepted by Unicode) and then a united front could be formed to push these standard codepoints into Unicode. Of course the cooperation with the Unicode Consortium is essential to such an effort. Any ideas? Hi, I have fixed the compile-errors that were caused by missing audio data. You can read instuctions about how to install the audio files in the file INSTALL. Errors by finding speex may be caused, when speex.h is not in the include path or when speex library is not in the library path. Can you send me a screen dump of the error? Thanks for the response. I can see where you are coming from for the Arabic Quran text, but the translations in other languages may be copyrighted by their rightful translators. For instance I know the translator for the Turkish translation and I doubt that his work is in the public domain. Copyright is a serious issue and I think it should be investigated what to be done with the libquran data from a copyright standpoint. Although the Arabic data seems clear enough that it is public domain, the translations I doubt. Any ideas?
