agreed.  I think it would be sufficient to have a @version tag in the javadoc
class comment using the $Id: tag, so we have  an information about the last
change, which could be useful.

I'm not shure, if the variable versionId is ever used for program logic. A cursory
look on grep -R 'versionId' * shows only definitions, no processing.

Perhaps Alan knows about the reasons.
