Thanks to Honza and Mitra for your help! Also thanks to Pep Turro for help with the selection values for date field pull downs. To recap I was having a pretty hellish time with AA stability. The issues I was having were: 1. Session instability. Screens don't always display current values 2. Views don't work. All that's displayed is "No item found" 3. Static views work but display "Odd Rows" content twice 4. When updating fields I often get "Error in Priority (it must be filled)" 5. Hold status not working And one thing I forgot to mention - If I had two includes (slice or view) within one html page, the second one would just dump the php source code to the screen. That was a nasty one... :) And my environment was: Redhat 9.0 Apache 2.0.46 PHP 4.3.1 Mysql 3.23.56 APC Action Apps 2.4.0 and the cvs version The resolution to all this is sort of anti climatic - upgrading to PHP Version 4.3.2 seems to have fixed the stability problems. I just upgraded the OS and software on my server in the last month so I'm running current versions of everything. I didn't realize a new version of PHP had been released until this weekend. Even so, I really didn't expect an upgrade from 4.3.1 to 4.3.2 to make much of a difference but it certainly did. Honza, you mentioned the caching problem was a known issue with the PHP and Apache developers and the next version of PHP is supposed to have a fix. Apparently it does. In fact there is a very long list of bug fixes in this release. The only two issues that the PHP upgrade didn't fix is #2, the view problem and #5, the hold status. The hold status is broke in the CVS but not the official 2.4.0 release. I'm sure you guys are aware of that. The view issue was a usage problem on my part. Maybe with a little more reading and experimentation I would have got it working but with all the instability problems I was having it was hard to differentiate between those and possible usage problems. Anyway, thanks to Honza and Mitra's help I should now be able to get this working correctly. Also, I'm running the CVS version now... Sorry for posting to both mailing lists... At some point I accidentally crossed over from the general to the coding list so I'll post this follow up to both. Thanks again Honza and Mitra (and Pep Turro). -jah |

I'm not a developer but >shouldn't there be some meta tags in the php code to control >caching? <meta http-equiv="expires" content="-1" /> and <meta >http-equiv="pragma" content="no-cache" /> for example? If you set nocache=1 in the URL, or the string to the View then it turns off caching, this can certainly help isolate problems, since if there is a problem the bad screen can get cached. There *were* problems with caching in the release version, but they should all be fixed in the CVS version. output_buffering shouldn't make any difference see http://www.php.net/ref.outcontrol, I'm pretty sure that variables_order thing just reads Environment variables, which won't be relevant. I'm guessing there are some other differences between your two installations. >2. Views don't work. All that's displayed is "No item found" > >I'm stumped on this one. In my determination to get a stable installation of AA, I have spent a lot of time working with it this weekend. Having no success on my production server, I set up a Redhat 7.3 system on a spare machine and installed Apache, PHP and mysql from the rpm's. So the environment is: Redhat 7.3 Apache 1.3.23 PHP 4.1.2 mysql 3.23.49 APC Action Apps 2.4.0 (also tried the cms version) I used the Redhat supplied php.ini which already had the AA required directives set (I did have to set file_uploads on): allow_call_time_pass_reference = On register_globals = On ; needed so that POST parameters end up in global variables magic_quotes_gpc = On ; needed to avoid various bugs with untested code! file_uploads= On To recap, my production environment is: Redhat 9.0 Apache 2.0.46 PHP 4.3.1 Mysql 3.23.56 APC Action Apps 2.4.0 (also tried the cms version) The problems I was having in my production environment: 1. Session instability. Screens don't always display current values 2. Views don't work. All that's displayed is "No item found" 3. Static views work but display "Odd Rows" content twice 4. When updating fields I often get "Error in Priority (it must be filled)" 5. Hold status not working Working with a slice that I created from the News (EN) Template. One by one, here is what I was able to find out, if anything: 1. Session instability. Screens don't always display current values Didn't seem to have this problem on the test system. Other than irrelevant settings like "highlight.string" these are the main differences between the two sets of php.ini files: y2k_compliance = Off : test server y2k_compliance = On : prod server output_buffering = Off : test server output_buffering = 4096 : prod server variables_order = "EGPCS" : test server variables_order = "GPCS" : prod server I would assume output_buffering would have some affect on this. I changed all three of the above settings on the prod machine and that seemed to help but didn't fix the problem completely. I even copied over over the php.ini from the test system and used it but no improvement over just changing the above settings. Deleting my browser cache and refreshing gets me a correct screen with current values. This is obviously a caching problem. I'm not a developer but shouldn't there be some meta tags in the php code to control caching? <meta http-equiv="expires" content="-1" /> and <meta http-equiv="pragma" content="no-cache" /> for example? 2. Views don't work. All that's displayed is "No item found" I'm stumped on this one. They just don't work as documented, period. In the webmaster's guide section of the APC ActionApps User Manual talks about views but doesn't actually say how to display them in your html. Of course when you create the view it does list the line that you need to put in your html and it mentions it in the faq too. I created a fulltext view which was view number 6 and put this in my html: <!--#include virtual="/view.php3?vid=6"--> On my page this is all I get: "No item found". So I tried to hard code the slice id into the include statement: <!--#include virtual="/view.php3?vid=6&set[6]=slice_id-f2b2fdec6a216720c30616630d1a6f2d"--> Same result, "No item found". Am I missing something here? What's the secret to this? Did the method of displaying views change and not get updated in the doc? Somebody explain this to me please... I would love to use this type of statement on my front page to display the latest two or three items from my news page in full text: <!--#include virtual="/view.php3?vid=6&set[6]=to-3 "--> 3. Static views work but display "Odd Rows" content twice On the test system this feature works fine. On the prod server it displays the content twice. I can't come up with any theories for this. It happens on the prod server even using the php.ini from the test server. The only other difference are the versions of the other software components. I have a left column that is the same for every page. I would love to put this into a static view so it's in one place and can be changed within Action Apps. As a workaround, I suppose I can do the same thing by putting this in a file and doing an include. At the top of this left panel I have a menu. I would love to be able to be able to change this dynamically, depending on the page they were on as described here: http://apc-aa.sourceforge.net/faq/#viewdynamic. I haven't even tried this though since I can't even display a simple view. 4. When updating fields I often get "Error in Priority (it must be filled)" I don't seem to get this on the test system but I do on the prod. Needless to say, the priority fields are "filled" correctly. This seems to have something to do with the "Edited by", "Posted by" and "Last Edit" fields. It seems to happen if I edit a field then update that and then click update on the fields page. The above three fields were not required or set to show in the News (EN) Template. I had checked them to show but not be required in my slice. When I get that error, I uncheck them, click update, recheck them and click update again in order to be able to save the page without that error. Same as problem number three - no theory. Difference in version of components? 5. Hold status not working This one was easy. It's broke in the cvs version. No biggie, development versions aren't expected to be bug free. Conclusions My production environment is a very common setup. The installation doc states that AA was developed on Redhat 6.0 and 6.2. Those versions are several years old. 1998 I think? It's not practical to run a production server on versions that old. Versions older than 7.1 have reached "End of Life" and are no longer supported with errata maintenance updates by Redhat. Even version 8.0, the next to the newest version, will reach End of Life at the end of this year, December 31. I installed mysql from the Redhat 9.0 rpm's. The version is 3.23.56. The installation doc says mysql needs to be 3.22.32 or newer so there doesn't appear to be any problem there. I compiled and installed Apache and PHP manually using the latest versions. In the software requirements from the installation doc for AA, it states that AA was developed and tested with Apache. It doesn't state a version requirement. I'm using 2.0.46 because I want the 2.x features and of course, you should always use the current version for security reasons. I'm using PHP version 4.3.1. The installation doc says AA works with PHP 3.0.12 and newer up to 3.0.16 and PHP4 also works. Then there's a note: "TODO: say which versions of PHP4 work fine, and which do not." I second that motion. Is there a problem with PHP 4.3.1? If so I sure would like to know. I suppose I could install an older version of PHP but what are the ramifications? I'm most concerned about security since this box is on the internet. PHP 3.0.18 is the only 3.x version available for download on php.net and that version is three years old... Action Apps does not appear to be very stable, at not least on my system. This surprises me because I think the application has been around for a while. It's up to version 2.4 with another update soon to be out. I've also seen a lot of good reviews on the net. And in fact, I really like the features myself. That's why I'm going to go ahead and try to use it despite the instability. For now I'll just do plain vanilla slices and for anything fancier I'll do something outside of AA. What about everybody else? Anybody else experiencing problems? If not, what is your environment? The only aspect of my environment that looks like it could be a problem is my version of PHP. I've spent a lot of time and done a lot of work here... I think that rates a response from the developers. How about it? Is there a problem with PHP 4.3.1? Should I go all the way back to version 3.0.18? If not, what's your best guess as to where I should look for the cause of problems 1-4 above? One last note... PHP 4.3.2 is out. There are a lot of bug fixes. I don't really expect it to make a difference but I'm going to upgrade and see. -jah |

<html> <head> <title>Untitled Document</title> <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1"> </head> <body bgcolor="#FFFFFF" text="#000000"> <h3>How to integrate APC-AA with mail</h3> <p>There are several places where APC-AA sends mail, and it can be confusing, especially since it is really easy to configure them wrongly so they don't work, and little help for figuring out why. Lets consider 4 cases. The Bugs and Weaknesses of each method are shown because they may help pick which method to use, and also help guide as to places for further development. </p> <h4>Slice Admin or Editor wants notification of new items added to Hold bin, or edited or whatever.</h4> <p>Use the <a href="#notify">Email Notification</a> functionality, here you can specify different messages to be sent when messages are added / edited to Active / Hold bins, and different recipient lists, so for example you can create a message to an Editor whenever a new message arrives in a Hold bin, and maybe a different message to the sysadmin when an item is moved into the Active bin (usually by the Editor). The message could be just something like "An item has been posted in Xyz slice" or by using aliases can include any fields of the item posted. </p> <p>Bug/Weakness: You can't use aliases in Subject line, this might be fixed in some version (but is unlikely to be a priority!)<br> Limitation: The members of the list can only be changed by a slice admin, so don't use this for Alerts ... </p> <h4>A number of people want to receive items posted to a slice</h4> <p>Use a reader management slice (see <a href="../apc-aa/doc/reader.html">doc/reader.html</a>) in conjunction with Alerts (<a href="../apc-aa/doc/alerts.html">doc/alerts.html</a>).</p> <p>Bug/Weakness: its complex to setup, and frequently people don't succeed, if you don't follow the Tutorial Step by Step (in <a href="../apc-aa/doc/alerts.html">doc/alerts.html</a>) you probably won't get it to work.</p> <p>Bug/Weakness: In particular it requires creating an anonymous form, which depends very much on the way its being used (e.g. called from something.shtml or site.php3). One possible development fix would be creating a PHP3 script that took the slice-id of an Alerts module as a parameter and did this much more simply.</p> <p>Bug/Weakness: documentation says 5.3a: View with type "Alerts Digest", when it means "Alerts Selection Set". </p> <h4>A number of people want to be in an email discussion, i.e. all posting to each other. </h4> <p>Use a Reader Management Slice (see <a href="../apc-aa/doc/reader.html">doc/reader.html</a>) in conjunction with Mailman, APC-AA is used to manage the mailman list </p> <p>Bug/Weakness: you can no longer manage the lists (subscribe/unsubscribe) by email to the Mailman account once you've done this, mailman will almost certainly be sending out email telling the users they can!</p> <p>Bug/Weakness: You have to understand both apc-aa AND mailman to get this to work since doc/reader.html refers to tasks that require knowing where to find and how to configure mailman. </p> <p>Bug/Weakness: There is no link between information in a slice, or discussions, and the email discussion, i.e. this is not - like yahoo groups - a web OR mail interface to the same set of data.</p> <h4>People wish to receive copies of new comments in Discussions by Email </h4> <p>See "<a href="#1388">FAQ/Discussions as Mail List</a>", this allows a field in each item to specify a mailing list.</p> <p>Bug/Weakness: This field has to be added to every item, it can't be specified at the slice level (make the field Required but not Shown and set a default). This is particularly difficult if you want to retrofit discussions to an existing slice, or something coming in over RSS. </p> <p>Bug/Weakness: This can only go to a single email address, so you have to manage the list somewhere else outside APC-AA (there is no way to for example link it to Alerts).</p> <p>Bug/Weakness: It doesn't appear to work, sends blank emails.</p> <h4>Summary</h4> <table width="95%" border="0"> <tr> <td height="16"> </td> <td height="16">Template for Email</td> <td height="16">Who gets the email</td> <td height="16">How sent</td> <td height="16">Bugs, Limitation and further development</td> </tr> <tr> <td>Notification</td> <td colspan="2">Admin -> Slice -> Email Notification</td> <td>Directly from script updating</td> <td> <p>Can't use aliases in Subject line<br> Can't self-manage recipients </p> </td> </tr> <tr> <td>Alerts</td> <td>Admin -> Slice -> Views -> Alerts View</td> <td>Readers from Reader slice, who can choose which to recieve</td> <td> </td> <td>Complex to setup (anon forms) </td> </tr> <tr> <td>Email Discussion</td> <td>Not applicable - its email to email</td> <td>Members managed by Reader Management slice</td> <td> </td> <td> <p>Requires understanding mailman to setup<br> Cant subscribe/unsubscribe by email<br> No slice -> email or email -> slice</p> </td> </tr> <tr> <td>Discussion -> Email</td> <td>Admin -> Slice -> Views -> Discussion to Email</td> <td>One hard-coded email address</td> <td> </td> <td>Doesn't integrate with Alerts so no recipient management at all<br> Doesn't work.<br> Has to be added to each item in slice.</td> </tr> </table> <h4>Note: </h4> <p>There is no integration for receiving email, although there has been discussion (where?) about posting articles by mail</p> <h4>See also</h4> <ul> <li><a href="#wizard">User creation wizard</a> - notifying new Slice Admin of wizard-created slice</li> <li><a href="#cron">Cron</a> - and entries needed for running Alerts</li> </ul> <p> </p> </body> </html> |

if config.php3 is bad then lots of things will fail, and the user will fix config.php3 ... I think if the user changes the path then again lots of places - anywhere relative URLs are used - will fail. But this is quite unlikely - we don't specify an image path it is ALWAYS assumed to be ../images from config.php3. I think you COULD change in existing templates - change it if, and only if, its still in its original state, that would be good, but not absolutely required. - Mitra At 10:51 AM +0200 4/6/03, Honza Malik wrote: >I will try (or you can). > >I see two problems: > >1) The absolute path to work.ecn.cz is used in SQL queries in >sql_update.php3 - it is written to database. sql_update is used also if >you create new database and config.php3 could be not so well configured. >If I write relative paths from config to the database and user then >changes the path, images will not show correctly. > >2) Templates on sql_update could not be updated (if user do not want - >and I obviously do not want) so for current users it will not help. > >Any suggestions? > > Honza > > > >On St, 2003-06-04 at 10:12, Mitra wrote: >> Repeat .... >> >> Can we get these loads from ecn.cz out for the release version? >> >> - Mitra >> >> >> At 12:03 PM +1000 29/5/03, Mitra wrote: >> >Hi >> > >> >There are a few places in APC-AA where images are being loaded from >> >work.ecn.cz for example the images used in the Discussions. >> > >> >Clearly that is wrong, but I'm not sure how to fix it. >> > >> >One source of problems in sql_update.php3 which explicitly names >> >work.ecn.cz/apc-aa/images for two view templates. I will try (or you can). I see two problems: 1) The absolute path to work.ecn.cz is used in SQL queries in sql_update.php3 - it is written to database. sql_update is used also if you create new database and config.php3 could be not so well configured. If I write relative paths from config to the database and user then changes the path, images will not show correctly. 2) Templates on sql_update could not be updated (if user do not want - and I obviously do not want) so for current users it will not help. Any suggestions? Hi Mitra, MS converter in the misc directory is just an experimental php interface to free command line converters like vwHtml http://www.wvware.com/, pdftohtml, xlhtml etc... The idea is that you as an editor can upload a file, the converter converts it to html and pastes it to the fulltext window and sets the html/plain swith to html. We have been testing mainly vwHtml for a while, it has certain problems, but in general can be a great time saver for editors. It needs further work to integrate it properly into AA, though I doubt we will ever include foreign tools that need to be compiled (which is in this case tricky enough) to AA distribution. I'll try to free some time to finish it off soon. Hi Mitra, I thought I catch release AA 2.6 during weekend, but I didn't. Is it possible to you to wait for Friday, when AA 2.6 will be released including database setup, small Links exmple and basic view setting pages? Hi I want to make corrections to some APC-AA documentation which has been written in docbook format This is a pain ..... first I have to figure out how to edit the XML - Jakub pointed to xmlmind.org, and I found this editor (its actually at) xmlmind.com Now ... I have to figure out how to create the anonym.html file. Please could someone who has worked with this format write the instructions for the FAQ. - Mitra -- Mitra Technology Consulting - www.mitra.biz - mi...@mi... 02-6684-8096 or 0414-648-722 Life is a Mystery to be Lived, not a Problem to be Solved |

Hi There are a few places in APC-AA where images are being loaded from work.ecn.cz for example the images used in the Discussions. Clearly that is wrong, but I'm not sure how to fix it. One source of problems in sql_update.php3 which explicitly names work.ecn.cz/apc-aa/images for two view templates. I'm not clear how to put a relative, or configured, path in here. Also ... in the next release, we should make sure to fix this in existing templates and views? work.ecn.cz also appears explicitly in createlogs.php3 , but its within a path so something is obviously incorrect. - Mitra -- Mitra Technology Consulting - www.mitra.biz - mi...@mi... 02-6684-8096 or 0414-648-722 Life is a Mystery to be Lived, not a Problem to be Solved |

I'm just implementing discussions for the first time, here are some of the problems I'm seeing. Note ... if I say "there is no way" and there is, then its probably a documentation failure. * To force discussion comments to be held for approval before display you have to edit the form to put <input type=hidden name=d_state value=1> this is both clunky, and easy to hack. The way that discussions get sent to mail seems even stranger to me ... * There is no way to specify an email address for sending comments for approval. * It seems strange to define who gets mailed FOR EACH ITEM, in almost all cases wouldn't this be something wanted at the slice level? * Even if we want to do this ... having to define a field by hand for the slice, "DiscussionMailList" shouldn't it at least be in the Core slice, so that its easy to add the field and get it right and shouldn't the test be by the field id, rather than the name - which forces using english name Even having done all this .... it doesn't seem to work, mail gets sent but its empty, has anyone made this work or is this not complete yet? - Mitra -- Mitra Technology Consulting - www.mitra.biz - mi...@mi... 02-6684-8096 or 0414-648-722 Life is a Mystery to be Lived, not a Problem to be Solved |

Honza.. I've edited the FAQ to show how to have discussions be initially hidden ... I believe the trick is to add <input type=hidden name=d_state value=1> into the FORM for new comments. This doesn't seem to be the best way to do this - maybe a parameter at the slice level would be better - but it seems to be the only way. - Mitra http://apc-aa.sourceforge.net/faq/#261 -- Mitra Technology Consulting - www.mitra.biz - mi...@mi... 02-6684-8096 or 0414-648-722 Life is a Mystery to be Lived, not a Problem to be Solved |

Hmm ... I don't think these are that similar ... if there is a param .... f_t looks to see if param is a field, and if so gets the value, and if it doesn't look like a field, then it unaliases the param If there is no param, then it converts the field to HTML (if text) f_y if the param is there then it unaliases the param if the param is not there then it unaliases the field. Comparing these two ... If there is a param, then the behavior is the same - even though the code is different - I hadn't spotted this behavior of f_t. But if there is no param, then there is a crucial difference, it allows for the Slice Administrator to specify that a certain field IN THE DATA can contain expandable {xxxx} strings. Normally { } are NOT expanded when they occur in the DATA, because otherwise they would be expanded where they are really text, but this makes some things really hard to do - for example where I have a site that displays a set of pages (each of which is an item) and one of these pages needs to call a view. Also .... it can't be removed in this release because I'm using it in live sites, and can't remember exactly where :-( - Mitra -- Mitra Technology Consulting - www.mitra.biz - mi...@mi... 02-6684-8096 or 0414-648-722 Life is a Mystery to be Lived, not a Problem to be Solved |

Thats not me who commented these out, I haven't worked on the anonym wizard, and don't know waht the "Email Templates" item does. Hi Mitra, Jason discovers you hide two items in 'Slice Admin' left menu: /* "anonym_wizard" => array ("label"=>_m("Anonymous Form Wizard"), "cond"=>IfSlPerm(PS_FIELDS), "href"=>"admin/anonym_wizard.php3"), "email"=>array ("cond"=>IfSlPerm(PS_USERS), "href" => "admin/tabledit.php3?set_tview=email", "label"=>_m("Email templates")), */ Is there any reason why the "Anonymous Form Wizard" should be hidden? Another question is about your new f_y alias function, which is nearly the same as f_t. Is it possible for you to use f_t so I can remove f_y? Honza |

Honza I've added a couple of expansion strings {include:xxx} or {include:xxx:http} work just like {include(xxx)} but {include:xxx:fileman} will look in the current slice's fileman directory for xxx and {include:xxx:site} will look in a directory whose name is defined in a variable site_fileman_dir (typically in modules/site/sites/site_yyy.php3) So .... it would be nice to be able to move allow file management capabilities from within a site module. Would that be possible / easy - I would suggest it would involve adding "fileman_dir" to the module parameters and "File Manager" to its menu. I haven't made this change because it involves a database change close to a new release, and i'm not totally sure of all the places to do it correctly, or if its a good idea. What do you think? its not a big deal for me, for now I've just got a spare slice where I'm doing stuff like that. - Mitra -- Mitra Technology Consulting - www.mitra.biz - mi...@mi... 02-6684-8096 or 0414-648-722 Life is a Mystery to be Lived, not a Problem to be Solved |

I saw that bug again where it complains about redefining get_aamenus() It occurred when I switched from a regular slice, to a "site" and was on the current CVS. I'm not sure what caused it exactly since I wasnt' able to repeat it and debug it. But .... it suggests something weird is going on. Is there some reason we have to redefine that function? - Mitra -- Mitra Technology Consulting - www.mitra.biz - mi...@mi... 02-6684-8096 or 0414-648-722 Life is a Mystery to be Lived, not a Problem to be Solved |

> Is the Links module ready yet - I need to build a links page, and=20 > could use / test / fix-bugs in it, or just use a slice again. It quite works, but: 1) there are no documentation in english 2) The sql_update.php3 do not prepare database for links module 3) There is not good admin interface for changing dataoutput (something like Slice Admin -> Design -> ...) The problem 2 (and maybe 3) will be solved in AA v2.6. So, if you have time to play with links module and you plan to create big catalogue with many categories in deep hierarchy, you could use Links - I will help you to set up database. If you just want one page with links, it is better to use standard slice.
