I am going through the Hour Glass tutorial. Everything seems to be going fine, except for the textures (well the colors actually). When I created my texture, the color was black. I can any change the shade of black (make it grey or white). I tried to make the glass texture too and I have the same problem. I am doing this on W2K and JDK 1.3.1.

I'm not certain what you mean when you say, "the color was black," but I will guess that the confusion is over the HSV color model. If saturation is set 0, the color will always be a shade of gray, regardless of the hue. If you increase the saturation in the color chooser window, you should see some color.
If I'm misunderstanding where you are having problems, please give a slightly more detailed description of exactly what you did, and hopefully I can provide a solution.
