This seems to be a "feature" added by Apple in Mountain Lion. By default, it will only let you run programs from developers who have registered with Apple. To run anything else, you need to go to System Preferences->Security & Privacy and select the "anywhere" option.
This would be only moderately obnoxious if they gave you a reasonable error message explaining what you need to do. But instead they just tell you the file is "damaged", making you think it's the developer's fault.
Apple is trying really hard to make me like them less.

Sounds like you might have the Sierra beta. They changed a setting a bit for the beta, see here. The final release of Sierra supposedly put the setting back. If you still experience difficulties, please let us know so that we can help troubleshoot further.

Sorry for the delay - I would have sworn that I replied yesterday!
I'm not a Mac user, so my guess about beta status was based entirely on the article I linked.
Did you get a chance to look at the article and see if the screenshots there look familiar? Also, did you make sure that you have Java installed? AOI requires at least java 5, and we do not ship the JVM with the application.

I’m running MacOS Sierra 10.12.5. I don’t see how that could be beta.
