So it seems the problem with the binaries was all a Bill Gates prank.

This runs pretty well on my Vista machine, as well as on another Vista 
machine where I just tried the binaries. But not on XP... The reason is 
Visual Studio automatically includes a vista-only dll belonging to the 
window manager.
I'll try to either deactivate this wonderful "feature" or rebuild on the 
XP machine.
