i have accidentally ran a few amavisd instances and
was surprised that there were no errors.
what happens if many amavis daemons listen to the very
same socket ? which one gets the input ?
should it be possible to run many amavisd'es ?

Nope.
Preventing this is on the TODO list. For the time being,
you should arrange your init script to execute the necessary
checks (existence of pid file, or pgrep amavisd).
