While the LMTP interface in dovecot 2.x is elegant, note that 1.x's delivery agent is rock solid, and unless there's a system configuration error, is capable of handling thousands of deliveries per minute on average hardware. The dovecot wiki has detailed documentation on the delivery agent integration with postfix, and fault troubleshooting.
