What exact version of SA are you running? I'm asking, because I've been feeding my spam to SA 2.63's bayes DB for weeks (if not months,) but I, too, did not see any difference in the amount of spam being tagged. Since I'm sure that my setup was correct, I assume that today's spam just is too smart to be detected by an auto-learning algorithm like bayes?!
The juice is: I've disabled autolearn and bayes within SA when I switched over to amavisd-new...
