Normally, amavisd-new is invoked via the Postfix content_filter
parameter *after* the message has been accepted by Postfix. If
amavisd-new rejects the message, Postfix will need to bounce it.
To avoid sending a bounce, amavisd-new must be invoked with the
smtpd proxy filter feature of Postfix 2.0 snapshots and the
upcoming 2.1 release. Only then can messages be rejected in the
original SMTP session, and therefore letting the connecting
MTA do the bouncing.
