I'm quite sure it could. The core developers, however, have
decided to focus on "key" features like file attachments,
drag and drop message management... stuff like that....
unless we happen to feel like doing other things....
That said, almost any quality addition that doesn't degrade
stability done by other authors will probably be
incorperated (provided it doesn't make it unreasonably
large, but we would concider having an official fork if it
did....)
So, if you want to add kerberos, feel free. That's a feature
that, if it was done well, I can say 100% would be
incorperated into the official release...
