altf (2) faq (1)

This page lists Frequently (and some less frequently) Asked Questions concerning installation and everyday use of ALT-F domestic NAS firmware. Existing answers are linked ad-hoc and most will lead you out of SF.net wikispace.

Reading the Beginner's FAQ from the DNS-323 Wiki is also advisable, although it is somewhat dated and not wholly applicable. Also, remember that any topic not mentioned here might already have been in the Alt-F Forum or at the official D-Link DNS Sharecenter forum FAQ.

Note: You are welcome to add pages, correct typos, improve wording or unclear meaning. To edit a page here (or to create a new one) you must be a registered Sourceforge user.

Why is it so slow?
The DNS-323 has a low-end hardware:
-The CPU runs at 500MHz, your PC probably runs at 3GHz, 6 times faster
-The CPU is single core, your PC has probably four cores, 4 times faster
-The CPU has no L3 cache memory, your PC has probably 8MB
-The box has 64MB of memory, your PC has probably 4GB, 64 times more
-The box memory runs at 166MHz, your PC memory probably runs at 1.3GHz, 7 times faster
All this "sums" up and your PC is probably 100 times overall faster that your DNS-323. See also this and this.

If I install Alt-F will I loose all my disks data?
No. Alt-F will use your disks as they are, no formatting will be made by default.
When you ask for an action that might put your data at risk you are alerted and a confirmation asked.

Forget password and can't login into the webUI
1. Use the Button recovery method to telnet the box at port 26
2. Execute the command rm /etc/web-secret

The login webUI will now ask you for a new password. The root user password will also be changed to the new password.

Fun_plug Slacker installer displays weird and unreadable
Slacker is the tool that is used to install packages in fun_plug 0.7. With standard Alt-F it will display unreadable and therefore unusable. This seems to be related to the shell that is used in ffp 0.7. The solution is to do the following every session you use slacker:
1. Login in through the normal shell
2. type: "exec /ffp/bin/bash" and press "enter"
3. type: "PATH=/ffp/sbin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/ffp/bin:/usr/bin:/bin" and press "enter"
4. type: "slacker -U" and press "enter"
5. Now you should be able to normally use slacker.

How to make Feature and package requests and bug reports
You can use the tickets menu from the menu bar above, it has items for bug reports, package requests and feature requests. If you select the proper item corresponding to your request you can create a ticket there. Please read the instructions that are given during the ticket creation.

Is it possible to move the Alt-F folder to a usb device?
Short answer is yes. You can move the Alt-F folder to a usb device. Alt-F uses the first found folder so you need to move instead of copy the folder. Note that when 3,5" external hard drives need an external power supply. USB sticks and 2,5" drives should be ok using the power from the usb port.

Does Alt-F accept disks bigger than 2TB?
Yes.

How to recover from Lost access after power outage
If the box can be accessed through MS-Windows (Samba/SMB/CIFS), but ftp/ssh/telnet/webUI etc can't be used, then 'inetd' is not being run. Press the back recessed reset button for more than 10 seconds but less than 20 seconds (the two front leds should start flashing twice a second) and you can telnet the box at port 26 as the 'root' without password. Then execute the command 'rcinetd start' and if it starts OK then the webUI should be accessible. Don't forget to "save settings". Read the "Button Recovery Actions" in the "About Buttons and Leds" on the wiki
