[Alsa-user] alsa-util ./configure failure I don't understand

I am not sure if I understand the ./configure process
with alsa's utils.  I did a system search and red the
output of my alsa libs.  The alsa libs were placed in
/usr/lib/ directory.  It placed asoundlib.h in the
default /usr/include/sys/asoundlib.h.  It complains
when given a plain ./configure command with no
aregument.  It complains that it cannont find
libasound.  Why is this?
I tried ./configure --with-alsa-prefix=/usr/lib/ and
several variations.
