dear sir, you ws absolutely right.i did nt instaled the alsa lib package.but i rectified myself after your suggestion and installed the alsa lib and then the alsa-util withought any error. even i was successful in unmuting from alsamixer.no i can hear my speakers on but as i try to play mp3 or midi files from xmms it says " soudncard not configured properly or some devices is blocking the sound acrd" what should i do?? a couple of things i noticed which may help you in diagonising the problem: 1. when i issue the command ./alsasound start nothing happens and the sound modules are not loaded. i have to issue the command" modprobe snd-card-fm801 " and then when i type " ./alsasound status " i get a confirmation that the driver is loaded. 2. after modprobe my mixer goes to "mute" stage and i have to again unmute them. 3. in my control panel >information> sound i have the following entries" Sound Driver:3.8.1a-980706(ALSA v0.5.11 emulation code) Kernel: 2.4.2-2 Config options: 0 installed drivers: ALSA emulation Card Config: ForteMedia FM801 at 0xe800, irq 5 Audio device: NOT ENABLED IN CONFIG Synth Device: NOT ENABLED IN CONFIG Midi device: 7: system timer Mixers: NOT ENABLED IN CONFIG 4. when i type aumixer in console i get the following error "Can not open mixer" 5. in my modules.conf i have the following entries: " alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc alias char-major-81 bttv alias usb-controller usb-uhci alias snd_dac_frame_size - max dac1 (playback) frame size in kB (4-128kB) alias snd_adc_frame_size - max adc (record) frame size in kB (4-128kB) " please suggest me a remedy....
