There seems to be a misunderstanding. The driver for your audio device is part of the kernel.org kernel. Did you try to install another driver? > snd_ac97_codec: disagrees about version of symbol snd_info_register ... because that would explain why you have sound modules that are not the correct ones for your kernel.
