Sure, but then there's the original problem again: I would have to 
determine the number of source channels, since I would only like to use 
the side speakers when source is stereo (or 7.1).

Because if got a 4.0 or 5.1 source copying whatever channels to the side 
channels would splash the positioning information.

Or did you mean to extend the plugin? Yes, I could have a look at it.
