In principle trying to feed it with an unsupported format should cause an error, but who knows... BTW: what if you remove everything from asound.conf and just play to "plughw:0,0" as per default? If that works, next step is trying to upsample but using the default plughw for output, that is something like this (*): pcm.up96k { type plug slave { pcm "plughw:0,0" rate 96000 } } (*) N.B.: written on the fly.
