I tried that (2.6.28-rc4) and I got a tone from gnome-sound-properties' test again, but aplay etc still gave errors. Then I realised the video driver hadn't initialised properly so there was no acceleration whatsoever. I rebooted, which fixed the video, but killed the HDMI audio again.
